The Role of the Area Governor

The Area Governor role is the critical link between the clubs and the District. The role is not elected - it is by the personal invitation and appointment by the incoming District Governor.

It is the only District Role which involves physically visiting the clubs and building a relationship with them. It is therefore very much at the forefront of nurturing, motivating and supporting the clubs. It is a highly rewarding and beneficial role and everyone who I know who has ever done it, has enjoyed it immensely.

From the club perspective, you provide clubs with support and coordinate support within the Area. You are their source of information about Toastmasters and what is happening within the District. Since new members start within a club, it is very easy to see the Toastmaster’s world as just that club. The Area Governor can help to open the door to the wider possibilities.

From the District perspective, you keep the District connected with the club. The District’s role is to support clubs in growing, so to maximise delivery of the benefits of Toastmasters for members and for communities. The District needs to know what is happening within the clubs so the right support can be provided at the right time.

Specifically, the actions expected include:

  • 2 days of District Training (usually June and January at a suitable venue)
  • Minimum of 2 club visits for each club, meeting the leadership team and completing a report online
  • Organising 2 Club Officer Training events, one before August 2010 and one before February 2011
  • Organising 2 speaking contests, one around September/October and the other around March/April
  • Chairing the Area Council, this consists of the clubs in your area and normally meets twice for an hour at Area contests
  • Being a member of the Division Council, this consists of the Division and Area Governors and meets twice for an hour at Division Contests
  • Completing a report for each of the two District Councils. Normally this is restricted to half a page per Area and is based on your club visit reports
  • Attendance at District Council is useful and fun
  • Motivating the clubs towards their DCP goals
  • Communicating with Clubs, Division Governor and District team
  • Finding and supporting the training of a successor
  • The main time consuming activities could be the Contests and Club Officer training unless you delegate and empower Clubs and other members to support you. Club Visits and communicating can be time consuming, most people say, they are also the most enjoyable and rewarding part of the role
